Sarunath (Sarnath), known in English as Deer Park, is the place where the Buddha delivered his first sermon, in which he espoused the Middle Path and explained the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. Kenro Izu took this shot of the great stupa at Sarnath (Dhamekh Stupa) at sunset, when it was quiet and uncluttered by tourists and pilgrims. Though not visible in this photo-graph, early seventh-century reliefs ornament the exterior of the stupa.
